Job Description:
Position Purpose: Under the direction of the Optometrist, the
Optician is responsible for fitting and dispensing spectacles and
other optical aids, working from ophthalmic prescriptions written
by the Optometrist. The Optician's role involves recommending
suitable eyewear, taking precise measurements, fitting and
adjusting glasses, eyeglass and contact lens orders, providing
guidance on proper usage and care of glasses, and contact lenses.
May also train insertion and removal of contact lenses and contact
lens care. Principal Responsibilities: Fill Prescriptions written
by the Optometrist: frame selection, measurements for filling
prescriptions, writing up orders for optical lab. Recommend frames
that align with the patient’s style, face shape, and requirements.
Adjust and fit frames according to prescriptions, patient
specifications, and facial characteristics. Prepare and verify
orders from optical lab using ANSI Standards prior to dispensing.
Repair and adjust ophthalmic frames. Neutralize patient's habitual
eyeglasses. Assist with discharge of patients. Operate specialized
equipment such as calipers, lensometers, lens gauges and
pupilometers. Maintain inventory of frames, frame supplies, contact
lenses and supplies to ensure a wide selection and for patient
satisfaction. Educate patient’s on proper wear and maintenance of
eye-glasses and contact lenses. Perform administrative tasks such
as managing prescriptions, patient records, insurance. Maintain log
for tracking eyeglass orders with optical lab & courier services.
Work with front office support staff in scheduling patients for
dispensing, contact lens trainings and appointments with the
Optometrist. Adhere to all organizational safety policies,
procedures, and regulatory requirements to ensure a safe
environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Participate in
required safety and compliance trainings and apply learned
practices in daily work activities. Identify, report, and help
mitigate unsafe conditions, incidents, or hazards in the workplace.
Use equipment, tools, and supplies safely and responsibly in
accordance with organizational and regulatory standards. Maintain
awareness of infection control, occupational health, and emergency
preparedness procedures appropriate to the role. Optometrist and
other health care providers.15. Participate in JWCH’s customer
service training called AIDET on an annual basis. a. Demonstrate an
understanding of AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration,
Explanation, and Thank You) to apply in patient encounters or team
discussions. b. Utilize the AIDET communication framework to
communicate with patients and team members in a manner that reduces
patient anxiety, increases patient compliance, and improves
clinical outcomes. Other Job Duties as needed: which may include,
but not limited to: pre-testing patients, preparing patients for
visit, assisting with patient flow, communicating with support
staff, Optometrist and other health care providers Requirements:
GED or High School Diploma. 1-year experience in an optical
setting. Excellent customer service and organization skills.
Current CPR Certification. Ability to travel from site to site as
needed. Experience in working with patients and staff from diverse
socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural background. Preferred:
Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus. Valid state license and
certification as an Optician. ABO Certification is preferred. *All
